A Vigorous Alliance:
About Our Affiliation with Meredith Village Savings Bank
Earlier this summer, we announced an affiliation between Merrimack County Savings and Meredith Village Savings Bank. Pending regulatory approvals, both banks anticipate joining forces under a single mutual holding company, New Hampshire Mutual Bancorp.
Customers for both banks can enjoy fee-free access to Meredith Village Savings Bank and Merrimack County Savings bank ATMs starting in mid-August.
Both organizations share a common goal to build a vigorous alliance between the two well-capitalized, healthy, independent community banks. This alliance will enhance each bank’s ability to better serve its customers and communities and to maintain each bank’s status as a sound, stable, independent institution as the banking industry faces new challenges and continues to consolidate in an era of rapidly expanding technology and regulatory pressures.
Samuel L. Laverack, President and CEO of Meredith Village Savings Bank, and Paul C. Rizzi, Jr., President and CEO of Merrimack County Savings Bank, will serve as co-CEOs of New Hampshire Mutual Bancorp, the first multi-bank mutual holding company in the state. As part of the alliance, each affiliate bank will retain its name and state charter, and each bank’s board of directors and senior management will continue to oversee the operations of their respective banks.
To learn more about the alliance, please visit our web site for the official press release, which includes a full listing of questions and answers.
Concord Farmers’ Market, The Longest-Running Farmer’s Market in the State!
The Merrimack is proud to be a long-standing sponsor of the Concord Farmers’ Market. Not only the oldest, longest-running farmers’ market in the state, the Concord Farmers’ Market actually started in our Main Office parking lot back in the early 1970’s.
Apple Hill Farm was established in 1978 and is located at 580 Mountain Road. Pick-your-own berries and apples are available as the season permits in addition to their farm stand. The farm opens on August 1 and stays open daily through the day before Thanksgiving. Hours are 8:30 AM to 5:30 PM.
The Accidental Invention:
History of the Piggy Bank
Here at The Merrimack, we are big fans of the piggy bank. Not only a fun toy, the piggy bank teaches children about the importance of savings money and helps them understand the concept of delayed gratification.
During the 19th century, English potters were receiving requests for pygg banks, shaping the clay containers in the form of the animal. The clever visual pun soon became embraced by people and loved by children.
To this day, it is even customary to give piggy banks as gifts because pigs are associated with luck and good fortune in some European countries. At New Year’s, in countries like Germany and the Netherlands, so-called “lucky pigs” are still exchanged as gifts.
